What's on offer?
Connect Cafe is open to anyone! If you are free on a Monday morning come and check us out! You can find a comfy spot and read a newspaper, meet some new friends over a board game, catch up with your emails on our computers, or sit and chill for a while. You are especially welcome if you are lonely, going through a bit of a hard time or would welcome the chance to chat something through with one of our team.
Sometimes we need a bit of help from people who won't judge us but will help and support us whether that is sorting out our personal budget, getting to grips with Universal Job Match, revising a CV or learning how to use a computer.
If we recognise that there is a need for a course we will do our best to provide it! It won't be pass or fail - just help along the way!
Wellbeing and work: 4 sessions on a Monday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30. This course answers some of the questions you may have if you have never worked or have been out of work for some time. Booking is necessary. Contact Vanessa for moredetails: firstname.lastname@example.org
CAP Money Course: 3 x 90 minute sessions. This course helps teach budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based system that really works. It will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can plan ahead well. If you are struggling with debt the course also offers help in thinking through your options to clear your debts.
Those attending the Connect Café regularly are invited to join a Connect Group where we learn about the Bible and pray for each other. From 1-2pm each Monday except Bank Holidays.
Opportunities to help in a variety of ways are available, both practical and befriending; from setting up the computers, serving tea and coffee, helping to prepare lunch, laying the tables, using the dishwashers to help clear up. For more details: email@example.com
Jim shares his experience of coming along to the Connect Café …
“My first contact with ‘Connect Café’ was in the late summer of 2016. I had just been through a difficult time with health issues both physical and mental. I was attending the meeting place at MIND and also having counselling. Although I was recovering from anxiety and depression, I needed to be with people who, like me, lacked a regular drop in centre where I was able to meet new friends and enjoy the company and support of people who cared.
Initially, I was feeling slightly apprehensive but went with an open mind. I was made to feel welcome and found it quite easy to settle in and not feel uncomfortable. Tea, coffee and refreshments were readily available as well as plenty of room to read a paper. Soon I realized that to get to know other people I would have to make an effort to introduce myself. It was not that anybody forced me to do this but to enjoy myself more I would try each week to talk to someone I had not met before.
It was through this simple but important step that I found myself looking forward to each Monday morning and it helped me as a person to begin socializing and share my own life experiences with people who I had not known before. I began to experience the ‘Connect’ or connection with other people who came along perhaps with similar needs. I felt a bond with many others because so many others understood where I was coming from.
At lunch time we have a shared long table where you can sit anywhere and meet new people you have not spoken to already. The atmosphere is informal and relaxing. Facilities are excellent, food is enjoyable and the time goes quickly. Soon it is time to leave but as I go out the building I look forward to next week.
I have found a special place and feel comfortable and safe, with my confidence growing. In fact, to sum up the experience, a veritable oasis in the middle of Watford waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.
Why not drop in and sample it for yourself? We are here every Monday except Bank Holidays.”
