Finance at Soul Survivor Watford

Here is some practical information about how you can support the work of Soul Survivor Watford financially.

It does not seek to answer theological questions such as:

Should I give when I have outstanding debt?
Should I give a tenth of my gross or net Income?
Is tithing Old Testament—doesn’t it all belong to the Lord?

If you would like to discuss these issues please contact one of the Pastors through the church office.

Soul Survivor Watford is part of the K & JM Morgan Trust, Registered Charity No: 287472

Where does the money come from to run Soul Survivor Watford Church?
From us - the congregation!  Also, as a registered charity we claim some of the tax paid on that money back from the Government, known as Gift Aid – see more below on this.

Anywhere else?
The SSW Church Bookshop makes a small profit each year.  Very occasionally, some specific gifts are received from Trusts or other donors but these must be spent on the purpose for which they are given.  Many of the activities we do are self funding e.g. Soul Tots.

What about the income from the Summer Conferences?
None of the money received from the delegates goes to SSW.  It is needed to run the summer events.

How can I give to Soul Survivor Watford
You can give in a number of ways:

  • Payroll Giving – a system whereby donations come straight from your salary before the tax is deducted. It’s available for anyone paying tax through the UK PAYE (Pay as you earn) system. Simply sign a form from your employer.  You donate a set amount of money.  Your donation is taken from your pre-tax earnings.  If you pay the basic rate of tax (20%) it will only cost you, for example, £8 to give £10.  If you pay the higher rate of tax (40%) it will only cost you £6 to give £10.  Speak to your employer for more information.  You can opt out of the scheme at any time.

If you wish to give in this way contact your employer for more information and when you have made the necessary arrangements please email finance@soulsurvivorwatford.co.uk so we can check it comes through.  Your employer will need the bank account information below.

  • Cash or Cheques  - Cheques can be made payable to “Soul Survivor Watford” or the “K & J M Morgan Trust”.  Cash to be gift aided should be put in an envelope – see below re Gift Aid.

  • Bank Transfer – more usual for one off donations.  Email us at finance@soulsurvivorwatford.co.uk for the details...

  • Standing Order – a regular monthly amount paid by your bank to ours.  You control how often and how much.

What is a Standing Order?
You fill in a form saying how much you want to give to the church each month.  Give the form to us and we send it to your bank. Alternatively if you bank on line you can set this up for yourself – bank account details above. Your Bank pay the money from your account to ours each month.  You can stop it or change the amount at any time. [This is not a Direct Debit where the organisation claims from your account].

Why is Standing Order a good way to give?
You are in control of how much and when.  We know how much and when so can plan ahead better.  You don’t forget as it is done for you with one instruction!  If you fill in a Gift Aid form – below - as well we can claim back the tax you paid.

What is Gift Aid?

A Government scheme by which registered charities can reclaim tax paid on the
donations they receive.  This is money you could not access and costs you nothing.

I’m not a tax payer can I still Gift Aid?

No you have to pay tax at least equal to the amount we claim back.

Giving via Gift Aid

If you are a UK taxpayer then we can claim the tax back on giving identified as coming from you. To do this we need a completed gift aid declaration from you.  You only need fill in this form once but if you give by cash then please use the envelopes provided at the front of church or on the welcome desk as we need evidence of where the cash has come from in order to claim the tax back.

Restricted Giving

If you are giving through the bank for a specific purpose [i.e. restricted] then please ask your bank to quote a reference e.g. youth, go.net, etc. If giving cash or cheque for restricted purposes please write on the envelope or cheque the reference.  This is so that it can be recorded and used for the purpose given.

Who oversees our Finances?

Chris Paskin, our Finance Manager, looks after the day to day running of the finances.  However, the budgets and expenditure are overseen by one of the Trustees who acts as Treasurer.  Our accounts are audited by a professional firm of chartered accountants and are available to anyone on request.

Why don’t we hire out our facilities?

They are in use most of the time!  Also, as part of the agreement with the Council in order to gain ‘change of use’ from industrial to a church it was agreed we would not hire for profit and that no other business would be run from here.  The Trustees also decided to keep buildings available for church and associated activities.

How else can I help?

Some suggestions:

  • Can you offer a discounted or free service? e.g. skills in design, printing, electrician, plumbing, decorating, catering and so on ...

  • Can you spare one or two hours to volunteer occasionally, once a week, month or term: to help with basic office tasks, cleaning, painting and maintenance?

  • Can you serve on a rota for one of the many activities? One or two hours a week or an hour once a month would be an amazing help.

If you have other ideas or would like to chat about how you can help contact the church office on 01923 204 200 or email secretary@soulsurvivorwatford.co.uk

We are a family and the leadership feel it is important that everyone in the family has the opportunity to give no matter how small the contribution.  As you consider how much to give towards the work of Soul Survivor Watford church, we ask that whatever you decide in your heart to give, whether 50p or £5000, you give with faith and, as far as you can, give regularly by standing order and through Gift Aid; so that together we can do the work of extending the Kingdom as he leads us. Important though balancing the books is, the amount in the pot does not make the decision.

We go to God for the vision and trust him for the provision

Many times we have not had the finance in place when we set out in obedience, but God has provided.  Our heart is to serve the local community, both within the church and in the surrounding area, to work with others across the town and across the nations in reaching out to the last, the least and the lost and see them come into the Kingdom.  Let’s do it together as a church family and celebrate together as we see the broken helped, the wounded healed and the lost won for Christ.
